Citizen’s Bank of Canada… gets two thumbs up!
By GreenCompany | December 4, 2008
A couple of years ago some friends turned me onto Citizen’s Bank and I haven’t looked back since. Originally spun out of Vancity Credit Union in BC, Citizen’s Bank is now 33,000 members strong across Canada with branch offices in Calgary and Toronto. What initially attracted my attention, a VISA card that donates $0.10 off each purchase to either Oxfam or Amnesty International. When I saw that, I started investigating some of their other products. A high interest savings account, a Clean Air Car Loan, and Green Mortgage to name a few products. They operate exactly the same as other traditional banks including protecting our deposits with Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Fees are significantly reduced or nil because they operate almost entirely online and don’t have to pay for the regular bricks and mortar network that most banks use. And in April 2008, they further differentiated themselves by becoming the first North American-based bank to be carbon neutral. That means the CO2 emissions that they create are now equal to the emissions they have reduced or offset elsewhere. The nerve centre of their operations is the National Contact Centre, in Vancouver, where a team of knowledgeable and helpful agents are available by phone 24/7 to answer banking questions and assist with transactions.
Every experience i’ve had with Citizen’s Bank has been efficient and helpful. I have always found their agents to be pleasant and knowledgeable about the products that they offer. So… high value banking, ethically conscious, and socially responsible? I dig it. Check them out at: https://www.citizensbank.ca/Personal/
