Genesee Mine Awarded 2009 Alberta Chamber of Resources’ Major Reclamation Award

By admin | February 7, 2009

The 2009 Alberta Chamber of Resources’ Major Reclamation Award will be officially awarded to EPCOR and Sherritt Coal at a banquet at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton on February 6. EPCOR and Sherritt Coal are being recognized for their environmental work at the Genesee Mine. Alberta Environment nominated the Genesee Mine for this year’s award after 600 hectares were turned into productive farm land and wildlife habitat.

In the areas reclaimed after exhausting the coal supply, reclamation actions including recreating boreal forest, re-establishing wetlands and creeks, and making wildlife corridors are undertaken. Much of the reclamation project has been focused toward agricultural lands.

EPCOR Vice-President of Power Services Doreen Cole said of their work, “We are committed to leaving the land in a condition equal to or better than we found it and our reclamation efforts at Genesee demonstrate how we are living up to that commitment.”

Situated 80 kilometers west of Edmonton, the Genesee Mine feeds the Genesee Generating Station 5.5 million tonnes of coal per annum. The generated electricity supplies approximately half a million area residents.

The Genesee Mine is operated as a joint venture between EPCOR and Sherritt Coal.

EPCOR has also been recognized for being one of Canada’s 10 Most Earth Friendly Employers. Learn more about EPCOR at www.epcor.ca
