Biogas Proposed As New Clean Energy Source

By admin | March 13, 2009

Terasen Gas is reviewing a total of nine potential projects whose aim is to bring about new clean and renewable biogas production. These proposals include generating biogas from wood destroyed by the pine beetle infestation in Western Canada. With large tracts of forest now dead and dying as a result of the voracious pine beetle, converting some of the dead-fall to biogas production may make sense.

Biogas generation is also being put forth from such sources a algae growth, municipal biowaste, and agricultural waste. These ideas come as a result of a Terasen Gas call for innovative ways to create new renewable biogas production. Since the request information sessions have been held across the province of British Columbia. Waste management companies, businesses and municipalities were asked to show interest in opportunities to expand upon existing production facilities, create new facilities and to formulate ways to produce and convert biogas so it can be used as a clean, affordable and renewable energy source.

Responses came in from all corners of the province. The ultimate aim is to produce a pipeline-quality renewable natural gas that can be utilized by the existing Terasen Gas energy system. These new energy sources will in turn be used to provide for hot water heating, electricity generation, transportation fuel, and home and business heating.

Terasen Gas Vice President of Marketing and Business Development explained, “Developing these types of projects will increase the province’s production of clean, renewable energy and help to reduce emissions from waste methane, which is 21 times more powerful in warming the atmosphere than CO(2).” Projects that are successful will see Terasen Gas enter into a contract with the producer of the biogas for the purchase of their newly created biogas.

This biogas initiative is part of drive by the Terasen Gas group to bring green and environmentally friendly energy to their home and business customers. It is a continuation of an earlier pilot project which captures and purifies biogas from West Vancouver’s Lions Gate wastewater treatment plant. That project will produce enough energy to heat 100 homes.
