Boreal Forest Ecosystem Protection
By GreenCompany | May 3, 2009
The University of Toronto was recently the scene of a discussion on new ways to help protect the Northern Boreal Forest. Taking part were academics, government policy-makers, various environmental groups, scientists and members of the general public.
The panel that assembled at the University of Toronto was moderated by the Ontario Environmental Commissioner Gord Miller. The audience was challenged by Miller to think of ways the province of Ontario and in turn other Canadian provinces can balance the needs of Aboriginal peoples and the Boreal ecosystems while creating new avenues for economic prosperity.
Forest ecologist and award winning author Herb Hammond explained, “Planning in the Boreal Forest has to start with big landscapes. The bigger the better. The more you know about forests, the more you realize you don’t know.” Hammond was stressing the need for caution in our dealings with the Boreal Forest.
Hammond’s latest book – Whole Systems on Earth’s Crown: Ecosystem-based Conservation Planning for the Boreal Forest, helps break down the differences between ecosystem-based planning and traditional land use planning. The discussion the panel undertook comes at a crucial time as the government of Ontario is currently drafting legislation that will encompass the future planning methods for the Far North.
With the continued pressure being exerted by climate change, it is essential that provincial governments like Ontario’s work towards protecting these sensitive areas in the Canadian north. The upcoming Ontario legislation will have a dramatic and direct impact on the communities in the north, the vitality of the northern forests and associated ecosystems.
