Power Shift Canada

By Green Guest | September 17, 2009

Students, young workers, and environmental activists are going to gather together on the nation’s capital, Ottawa, from October 23rd to October 26th to take one of the greatest stands for climate control in Canadian history. This largest youth gathering for climate control is being titled the Power Shift Canada.

Power Shift Canada is a planned four day event that is going to be dramatic, exciting, and allow the youth of Canada to be a part of making the decisions for their future. The youth speakers plan to speak to the elected officials about their concerns on October 26th in a massive lobby. Here they will boldly state the actions that they would like to see in effort to clean up the Canadian environment. The youth strongly believe they have a say in their future, and they would like to see the government create thousands of green jobs and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions to levels suggested by federal scientists.

“At Power Shift Canada we are going to send a message to our elected officials that if they don’t support action on climate change, we’ll elect politicians that do,” said Tria Donaldson, lead coordinator for Power Shift Canada.

Saturday, October 24th is International Day of Action on Climate Change. In addition to their stance at the capital, in cite of International Day of Action on Climate Change, the youth has planned Power Shift Canada to coordinate with a massive demonstration at Parliament Hill. Here the brave, dedicated youth will speak up again to voice their opinions and suggestions that will provide them with a better, more fulfilling future.

Tria Donaldson stated that the goal of Power Shift Canada is, “to help connect youth who are taking action on climate change in their communities, workplaces and schools and forge a single, united voice that demands aggressive action from the federal government to deal with the impending threat climate change will have on our environment and our economy.”

Power Shift Canada is not stopping there. Power Shift Canada is being sponsored by the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, which is the voice of Canadian youth on climate change, in order to participate in numerous national and international events planned for the remainder of the year. Internationally Power Shift Canada has gathered over twenty thousand youths worldwide to lobby their government for action to improve the climate. Power Shift Canada wants to voice to the public about the severity of the pollution in the world and bring about environmental awareness before the UN climate negotiations take place in Copenhagen this upcoming December.

Aside to Power Shift Canada, other numerous campaigns will be going on between now and the UN’s climate negotiations. There is a national video competition where youths are encouraged to to voice their concerns about climate change, show the impacts they see in their communities, and let the world know why they want to see a change. There is also an online photo rally for green jobs where the youth around the world can share their vision of a green and sustainable workforce. Also online, youths can vote for their Top Ten Actions for the government to take to improve the climate.
