Make This Christmas Season A Green Christmas
By GreenCompany | November 10, 2009
The Christmas holiday season can be one of the worst times of year for the environment but you can do something about that this Christmas. With a bit of work you can have green toys for your children while ensuring your holiday lighting and Christmas tree displays are more environmentally friendly.
All you green parents out there with young children will be happy to know that this year you can utilize the Green Parents’ list of the top 10 green toy choices. This top 10 list contains children’s products available this holiday season. The top choices were selected after looking at a number of factors including their overall appeal to both parents and kids and how they comply with regulations regarding their material composition. The products must meet strict guidelines for their phthalate, heavy metal and lead content.
After you have viewed the list below you can also get started on greening your Christmas light display by learning from what they are doing in Toronto.
The Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited along with the City of Toronto’s Cavalcade of Lights is giving consumers one free string of energy efficient LED lights to replace their older incandescent lights. The lights that are turned in are not simply thrown away either and neither do your lights need to be. If facilities exist you can recycle some or all of the materials from these lights. Ask your local recycling location for more information. LED lights use some 95 per cent less electrical energy than the older incandescent lights. LED lights are also cooler and lesson the chance of a fire starting!
Once you have your new lights in place you can also forgo buying new tree decorations by using recycled and reused items that you can find around your home. This makes creating decorations with your family all that much more rewarding. Challenge your family to make the most creative decorations they can by using materials no longer needed in your home that might otherwise end up in the landfill. Your children will find this highly entertaining and it emphasizes recycling and togetherness.
The product list below has been reviewed against the strict substance requirements as outlined by the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. Parents shouldn’t have to worry about the toys their children enjoy playing with causing unforeseen health problems because of toxins they might contain. Patricia Calder the president of Green Parents’ List says of the list, “The Top 10 Green Christmas Gifts List and the Green Parents’ List provides consumers with a resource for finding products from manufacturers that have taken the time to ensure a greener, safer holiday. Every holiday season, parents are bombarded with product recall information that results in stress and frustration for both parents and children.”
