Survey Shows Canadians Consider Solar Power But Find Cost Prohibitive

By GreenCompany | September 7, 2010

A new survey has found that one in three Canadians have considered solar power for their homes but have found that current costs make it prohibitive to purchase and install. The survey of homeowners was conducted by the Toronto-based Research House on behalf of TD Bank Financial Group.

Results also show that half of Canadian homeowners know at least some of the benefits of installing solar panels on their homes. Respondents could identify benefits such as lowering their monthly electric bills with the side benefit of being able to sell excess power in some provinces.

Other reasons Canadians should consider installing solar panels include the obvious benefit for the environment but also that it may increase the value of their home as it would cost less for the next owner to maintain as well. Solar panels are low-maintenance and now often last past 25 years.

The survey found though that with so many Canadians feeling solar power is unaffordable that they felt it was out of their reach unless financing or government grants/tax breaks were available. There are some programs and rebates available to Canadians but they are not well advertised and can be hard to find. We will cover some of these in another article soon.
