First Nissan LEAF

By GreenCompany | September 25, 2011

Delivery of first Nissan LEAF in Canada

CNW Group/Nissan Canada Inc.

The first Nissan LEAF electric vehicle has been delivered after making its long-awaited debut in the Canadian market. Ricardo Borba was the lucky recipient, and to much fanfare which included Nissan Canada President Allen Childs personally delivering the first vehicle to the Ottawa dealership.

The Nissan LEAF is a vehicle we have covered since it was first announced as a production model. Green Company Canada has also highlighted the all-electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV which was the first all-electric vehicle to cross Canada. These types of vehicles and other hybrid vehicles are here to stay and their use will only increase with time. Some provinces are also offering rebates, which Ricardo Borba stated he was taking advantage of in Ontario.

Charging infrastructure still remains a challenge as most buyers will have to rely solely on home-charging units. Interestingly enough though, private companies are already releasing upgrades, additions and other aftermarket parts and accessories for these new vehicles. This may help begin to bridge the gap that currently exists between the addition of these new all-electric vehicles and the ability to easily charge them and extend their ranges.

Nissan is really working hard and their hard work is paying off as their first mass-produced all-electric vehicle is garnering worldwide recognition as Nissan’s LEAF was named the 2011 World Car of the Year. The varied and sometimes harsh Canadian climate will really tell if these vehicles can indeed find their way into homes across Canada and not just in the cities straddling the border.

Those wondering when they can order a Nissan LEAF need wonder no longer – Nissan has announced that in late October they will start taking online reservations for the 2012 Nissan LEAF. Find out more at – nissan.ca/LEAF
