Why Upgrading May Be Better

By Green Guest | May 17, 2013

Laptops aka Notebook computers, are fashionable, but here is another reason why you need to go mobile and leave your desktop computer behind – your wallet will thank you!

The electronic gadgets that we toss out aren’t the only form of electronic waste – the hydro used to power older inefficient electronic devices is wasted too.

According to a calculator provided by Ontario’s Hydro One, your typical desktop computer can consume 10 times the electricity as compared to their mobile brothers. If left on for a month, the average desktop computer (yes, Macs too) will burn 144 kWh (kilo Watt hours) of electricity. At a rate of 15 cents per kWh, that mighty tower will cost you $21.60, or $259.20 a year for the electric bill alone.

A laptop, on the other hand, will use 14 kWh over a month and cost you $2.10 for a month or $25.20 for a full year. Better yet, the battery contained in a portable computer allows you to disconnect from power and save even more!

If you are looking to upgrade, or thinking about ‘next time’ the need will arise, consider this – prices have fallen so much that you can buy a laptop today for less than what a desktop sold for just a few years ago. Checking online, you can buy a brand name laptop for under $500 from your local shop.

Upgrading to a laptop will save you money, reduce climate changing carbon emissions, and free you from your desk. Just remember to recycle the old one with a reputable electronics recycling company/service and help keep our planet clean.
